Your body’s amazing ability to respond to stress
Stress is defined as the body’s specific and non-specific response to any demand made upon it. Your body is made up of many systems that need balance or homeostasis, an environment conducive to proper function. Stress could be described as the effort your body makes as a whole and systematically to maintain this balance, i.e. when you are cold you shiver to produce heat, when you are hot you sweat to cool down. These are your body responses to the stress of overheating and being too cold. There are a multitude of cellular and systematic adaptations and changes made every second in your body to maintain a healthy nontoxic environment.
You were designed to live to be 144
The biggest misunderstanding about stress is not about how your body reacts to stressors but what your body’s natural state of operation is, your modus operandi. The physical and emotional state you are supposed to spend 98% of your life in, is not the lifestyle that is perpetuated in today’s modern society. If you can predict a mammal’s life expectancy by multiplying their sexual maturity by age 12, our bodies are designed to last 144 years with basic maintenance. This gives you some idea of how far removed from our natural state we are.
So what happens when you encounter a stressor or stress trigger? Well, first the stressor is recognized, this is the alarm stage, cortisol the body’s stress hormone is released, you get ready for fight or flight. This is an immediate reaction. The second stage is the adaptation stage, your body’s systems try to perform at a higher pace to give you a chance to get out of the stressful situation. You only have a limited amount of energy reserve for this adaptation stage and everyone’s amount is different. So your lifestyle of prolonged low, medium, and high stress cause your stress adaptation energy reserve to deplete. This energy reserve is essential for survival, so when it is depleted it draws energy from other systems, usually your immune or digestion. Eventually all of your circadian rhythms will be affected. It is this constant drawing of energy that eventually causes a breakdown in one of your systems, this is what the doctor is talking about when they say you have a stress related illness.
Stress is NOT a disease
So stress is not a disease rather it is a culmination of symptoms of stress, the constant drawing of energy from other systems that causes poor performance are described as ill health. This constant poor performance on low energy leads to disease. The physical and emotional effects of your body’s stress response are pervasive whenever pain, worry, prolonged discomfort and grief are present.

A client is a person who is able to make decisions about their health. Do you want to be a client? if not just wait and become a patient.
Thriving and surviving are reflections of our subconscious attitudes, attitudes of self worth and poor opinions on life and what it should be. We don’t make our choices based on our reality; we make our reality based on our choices. Our emotions dictate our actions, but science has proven that our actions will dictate our emotions. Act happy to be happy. Thriving and surviving are both choices, surprisingly; just getting by takes way more energy than thriving.
People who thrive take good care of themselves and I am saying that people who choose to take good care of themselves will thrive. Small lifestyle changes like massage for health have a huge positive snow ball effect on every aspect of our lives.
Our emotional energy creates our reality, the stories we tell ourselves create our emotional energy and we act accordingly. Acting, for example “fake it until you become it” is a proven road to success. If you physically express something you will generate the matching emotions and create that reality, this is the law of attraction.
Mohammad Ali took this a step further; he always did a power pose, arms raised above his head in triumph when he declared” I am the greatest”, and he did this before he won anything. So physical expression and physical action create physical reality. If you choose massage as a conscious mental and physical expression of self love and acceptance the universe will read this as an” I choose to thrive” statement and your reality will reflect this, it’s a universal law. As a result of the massage you will generate the same emotional energy as those that do thrive and like magic the universe will match your reality to your energetic vibration. If you are waiting to be a success before you take care of yourself, “spoiler alert”, it’s not going to happen. “Happiness comes before success”.
Taking care of yourself, choosing to thrive now, mimicking the life choices of those that do thrive is a guaranteed recipe for success, Certified Life Coach Sue Birkam has coached me and this is what she has to say. , “When we are not thriving we have bought into a belief system that no longer serves us and we make choices and decisions about what life “should” be based on the perceptions of these beliefs.”
When we decide to unlearn the beliefs and habits that no longer serve us only then can we re-write our new life script. Before we can explore the rooted patterns of beliefs that have driven our lives up to this point, it is fundamentally important to start with selfishly motivated self-care and cease putting others agendas before our own.
If we deny ourselves self-care we have less of a chance of having the energy or the capacity to thrive and instead find ourselves in survival mode. Self-Care is essential as it is simply meeting our basic needs. When you think of self-care you may think of eating, resting, taking time for ourselves—all accurate. In order to truly thrive instead of survive; the opportunity exists for a level of extreme self-care that you may not have considered. This includes stress elimination not stress management, emotional , mental and spiritual balance, self-empowerment, setting wider boundaries, physical attention including healthy eating, exercise, regular expert massage, meditation, proper breathing, your home and work environment and significant but often never achieved is the ability allow pleasure into our lives. Do you Thrive? Or are you merely surviving just to get by? . . . .
I believe that we are a soul with a physical body to expresses our authentic selves. When we physically express our authentic personalities we thrive and experience
vitality. When we physically express attitudes that are not in alignment with our unconditional authentic selves we experience stress.
Stress is defined as two opposing forces pulling away from each other. We have an authentic personality and what some call a fear based or ego personality. No matter how clever we try to become our ego based personality cannot change our authentic personality. All the effort we make to not follow our authentic personality results in the stress that we experience in our physical bodies, hence the expression “we keep our issues in our tissues”.
At our massage studio in Berkley we practice Clinical or western medical massage
and Holistic massage techniques, i.e. Reiki and Thai massage. After a massage, our clients are treated to tea and encouraged to relax, allowing their treatment to integrate and really soak into their bodies, even our clinical clients are encouraged to journal and expect emotional energies to surface. This is because our physical bodies mirror our emotional bodies, and when you remove the toxins and release the tense muscles caused by stress the emotional energy naturally comes to the surface in order to release as well. If you are aware of this and are willing to let go of the attitudes that caused the stress in the first place, massage, is an amazingly healing process. If the connection isn’t made, you will blame the tense muscle in the same place all the time on the physical rigors of life.
The ancient Toltec believed that as spiritual beings we have the power to create our personal realities, and those we created through physical expression, especially through our words. Our words are an expression of our subconscious beliefs, or
more accurately what we choose or agree to believe. When we agree with someone we share their reality. I believe that people inherit or grow into the attitudes that cause bad backs or knees rather than inherit genetic bad ailments. I read that Hawaiians once used massage and energy healing to remove every physical, emotional and mental trauma from adolescents in a ceremony to prepare them for the adult journey of their lives, like a clean slate. I’m sure this looked like magic to the first visitors to the islands, but it made me think about all the dysfunctional beliefs I could be carrying from childhood into adulthood, more
importantly how these subconscious beliefs affect my life now, and how can I release them permanently.
The earliest physicians used massage and diet as their main arsenal against disease and illness, responsible for the health of emperors in ancient Japan these healers were on call 24 hours and ranked very high in courtly life. They’re earliest
writings and medical texts on massage all describe beginning treatments with a prayer, addressing the spiritual body first, then the emotional, the mental and the physical. They knew that understanding the spiritual, emotional and mental was just as important as physical knowledge of the body.We experience emotional energy flowing through our bodies every second, yet the connection between physical health and emotional health is greatly overlooked.
We spend billions of dollars dissecting cells and dosing them with chemicals aiming for results that ancient wisdom tells us can only come from within. We have all heard that chicken soup cures a cold, but few make the connection that a good diet is good for a life, this is the same for massage, a massage is great when you want to feel better but regular massage is better if you want to feel great. We are just not used to feeling good most of the time, it’s like we have forgotten that feeling good is our natural state. When you are feeling good you’re thinking well, and if your thoughts are creating your reality then feeling good is the answer to changing your reality, not vice versa. Massage is 100% potent, feel good, all natural, clinical medicine.
Think about how your emotional stress affects your physical well being and what you do to release it . . .?
Massage: antidote for stress related illness.
Stress is the clinical term used to describe our body’s internal metabolic changes to remain in healthy life preserving balance with our environment. There are two stages of stress, alarm and adaptation. Our bodies have a limited supply of energy for each of these stages, the measure of this energy is known as our stress reactivity. When we are in good holistic health our stress reactivity is high, meaning that we can deal with stressors in a productive manner. It is important to note that stress is not the result of bad health or mood swings, it is the exact opposite, poor health and mood swings are the result of prolonged exposure to stressors without restoring our stress reactivity energy reserves.
Every body’s stress reactivity energy levels are different; however all of our stress reactivity levels diminish from prolonged exposure to stressors. Our survival depends on our ability to respond and adapt to stressors, therefore when our limited stress reactivity energy levels drop our body diverts energy from other body systems, the first system is usually or immune system.
Chronic intermittent exposure to stressors like work deadlines, stimulants, emotional trauma and even weather etc deplete our stress reactivity energy levels which in turn causes us to drain energy reserves from other body systems which is what leads directly to stress related illness.
Stressors and the severity of the stressors can be real or imagined, fear, treats to self esteem, challenge, change, Injury, illness, pain, fear, excessive intake of stimulants, environmental exposure, grief, emotional traumas are all stressors that we can make even worse in our mind if we have depleted stress reactivity energy levels. Our responses to perceived stressors are programmed from childhood into our subconscious. At our studio in Berkley we offer a five week, fully comprehensive and integrated self hypnosis learning program, identifying negative subconscious beliefs, neutralizing them and positively rewriting the script for a life we do want to experience. Self care and thrive is a habit just like self destruct and live miserably is a habit, which would you choose if you could ?
When we exhaust our stress reactivity energy levels we exhaust our general health and mood, signs of acute stress response or alarm stress response will then occur in the event of minor stressors, in short we over react and even experience complete breakdowns.
The number prescribed antidote for stress related illness, which I believe is all illness, is relaxation, that’s right people, this is why they have beds in hospitals.
It’s the prolonged exposure to stressors which we call worrying and now accept as our normal state which does all the damage, the first signs of this damage is insomnia, restless sleep, poor digestion, over reacting or flipping out over small stuff that our society is so familiar with that it appears normal or understandable. Relaxation is the cure everybody, and massage induced relaxation is the number one holistic prescription for relaxation. The body’s response to massage is not only the rejuvenating effects of the endorphins it creates but the increased elimination of metabolic waste or stress toxicity. The energetic results of saying yes to yourself and taking physical steps to care for yourself can only be described as magical as the results will be noticed in every aspect of your life.
Stress is defined as non specific body responses that our body naturally does to preserve life and a healthy balance between you and your environment. These responses are internal with external results. These responses deplete energy reserves. If these energy reserves are not replenished through relaxation and stepping away from our stressors, mentally and physically then we will drain energy from all of our other metabolic systems. Our lifestyles of deadlines and expectations continuously depletes our life energy reserves and our lack of habitual relaxation and rejuvenation eventually leads to break down, most of our lives are spent in a state of poor maintenance, and only when we experience a full system breakdown do we look for a magic pill. The cure is in our hands, a lifestyle of regular relaxation and rejuvenation. The stressors in life will come like clockwork and regular relaxation, rejuvenation and flushing stress toxicity from our bodies is the number one clinically proven prescription. You do the math, regular massage saves you money, keeps you feeling great, optimistic, well rested and energized.
